Cox Plate Carnival – Australia’s Race Where Legends Are Made

The Cox Plate Carnival is one of the most prestigious and exciting events in Australian horse racing. Held annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, the carnival attracts elite thoroughbred horses, champion jockeys, international trainers, racing enthusiasts, and massive betting attention from around the world.

Known as “The Race Where Legends Are Made,” the W.S. Cox Plate is widely regarded as Australia’s premier weight-for-age race and one of the toughest tests in world racing.

History of the Cox Plate

The W.S. Cox Plate was first run in 1922 and was named after William Samuel Cox, the founder of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. The race was created to showcase the best horses competing under equal weight-for-age conditions rather than handicaps.

Since its beginning, the Cox Plate has produced some of the greatest moments in Australian racing history and remains one of the most respected Group 1 races in the country.

Why the Cox Plate Is So Famous

The Cox Plate stands out because it consistently attracts elite middle-distance horses from Australia and overseas. The race is run over 2040 metres at the tight-turning Moonee Valley circuit, creating an intense and thrilling atmosphere unlike any other Australian racecourse.
